Stops of Tram Lines 1 and 3

The renewal of approximately 70 stops on tram lines 1 and 3 was connected to one of Budapest’s major fixed-track public transport development programmes. The aim of the development was to create more modern, more accessible and visually more consistent passenger environments at the stops of these high-traffic tram lines.

The work was not about designing standalone buildings, but about coordinating stop elements that are repeated on an urban scale, while still differing from location to location. In the design of platforms, platform canopies, shelters, passenger information elements, pavements and pedestrian connections, traffic safety, accessibility, maintainability and urban appearance all had to be considered at the same time.

We participated in the project as a sub-designer of the consortium that won the public procurement procedure. We prepared architectural work packages related to the feasibility study, the building permit design and the tender design.

In designing the stops, the most important task was to create solutions that are easy to use, clear and well integrated into the urban environment, even within fixed technical and transport constraints. As a result of the development, the renewal of the passenger areas of tram lines 1 and 3 contributed to making tram transport in Budapest more comfortable and more accessible.
