Győr - underpass

The Nádor underpass in Győr was developed to improve the road connection between the city centre and Nádorváros, while also helping to relieve traffic on the Baross Bridge and the surrounding inner-city road network. The structure provides a 2×2-lane road connection and accommodates both pedestrian and bicycle traffic.

Our responsibility was the bridge engineering design of the structure. One of the key challenges was that the underpass had to be constructed beneath a busy international railway line while maintaining continuous rail operations throughout the works.

The high groundwater level and the dense railway infrastructure added further complexity to the design. Extensive utility and cable relocations were required, while dewatering and the safe retaining of the excavation were also important engineering considerations in the construction of the underground structures.

The completed underpass created a new direct connection between Nádorváros and the city centre. In addition to increasing road capacity, it integrated pedestrian and bicycle traffic and has become an important element of Győr’s urban transport network.
