Road Flyovers in Sri Lanka – Kohuwala and Gatambe
We participated in the design of two road flyovers in Sri Lanka, located in the Kohuwala district of Colombo and the Gatambe district of Kandy. The developments aim to relieve congestion at busy urban intersections, reduce traffic delays and improve road connections. Implemented within the framework of Hungarian–Sri Lankan economic cooperation, the projects also provided an opportunity to apply Hungarian engineering and manufacturing expertise internationally.
Commissioned by Betonútépítő Zrt., our bridge engineering team prepared the permit, detailed construction and fabrication drawings for the two steel–concrete composite flyovers. Our responsibilities also included construction methodology and temporary works design. A distinctive feature of the project was that the steel structural components were manufactured in Hungary and transported to Sri Lanka in shipping containers, where they were designed to be assembled using bolted connections instead of on-site welding.
The transportation method had a significant influence on the structural design. Due to the size limitations of shipping containers, we had to work with components no longer than 12 metres. This meant that the division of the structures into transportable sections and the design of their connections had to be determined at an early stage. Our engineering solutions had to meet structural requirements while also taking into account manufacturing capabilities, transport constraints and on-site assembly conditions.
The design of the two flyovers demonstrates how bridge engineering, prefabrication and construction methodology can be integrated into an international infrastructure project. We developed structural solutions that considered the requirements of the entire implementation process, from manufacturing in Hungary and transportation over thousands of kilometres to final assembly on site.
