Circular Bridge at the Final Junction of Main Road No. 47, Hódmezővásárhely Bypass

The circular bridge at the final junction of the Hódmezővásárhely bypass section of Main Road No. 47 is one of the region’s distinctive transport structures. The grade-separated roundabout, also known as the Kopáncs circular bridge, organises the traffic connections of the bypass while providing a functional solution for the crossing of Main Road No. 47, the adjoining road sections and the railway line.

The specific professional character of the bridge design task came from the constraints of the site. Railway line No. 135 runs on an embankment in the area, so the overpass had to be positioned significantly higher than would be required for a standard road clearance. In the design of the circular bridge, the railway crossing, road connections, ramp branches and the safe movement of larger vehicles all had to be taken into account at the same time.

We participated in the project with building permit and construction design services. The work of our bridge design office covered the design of a complex grade-separated transport junction structure, where geometry, structural system and traffic operation were inseparable design considerations.

The circular bridge is a large-scale structure consisting of several structural units. During the design process, the main engineering task was the coordinated development of the circular carriageway, the adjoining bridge sections, the retaining wall sections and the crossing above the railway. The solution supports safe traffic flow, adapts to the site conditions and enables long-term, sustainable operation.

The value of the development lies in the fact that, as part of the bypass road connection around Hódmezővásárhely, it improves the transport system of the city and the wider region. The grade-separated junction contributes to more efficient routing of through traffic, while also representing a distinctive engineering example of bridge design adapted to local site conditions.
