Baku Bay Bridge

The Baku Bay Bridge was connected to one of the large-scale transport development concepts of Azerbaijan’s capital. The aim of the concept was to examine a new road connection over the water that could have relieved the traffic system of the city located along the bay of the Caspian Sea.

The design task was related to examining the feasibility of a 10.5-kilometre, 2x2-lane urban road or motorway. The bridge would not only have served as a transport connection, but would also have appeared as a major engineering element in Baku’s cityscape, visible from a great distance.

We participated in the project with bridge design and architectural concept development services. We prepared architectural and structural concepts for a total of 15 bridge variants, examining different structural, urban design and feasibility options.

The professional focus of the work came from the fact that, in the case of an exceptionally long urban bridge over water, structural behaviour, alignment, pier placement, traffic capacity and architectural appearance are inseparable design questions. At this scale, a bridge is not merely infrastructure, but also an element that shapes the relationship between the city and the waterfront.

The design variants supported decision preparation by examining what bridge engineering and architectural solutions could make a new bay connection meaningful in Baku’s urban and waterfront environment.
