Renovation of the Erkel Theatre

The renovation of the Erkel Theatre was connected to bringing one of Budapest’s key venues for opera and ballet back into use. The aim of the development was to make the theatre, which had been closed for an extended period, suitable once again for receiving audiences, hosting performances and supporting the operation of the Hungarian State Opera.

During the renovation, the renewal of public areas, the auditorium, stage technology and support spaces all played an important role. In a facility of this kind, the technical condition of the building, regulatory compliance, audience safety, operability and the practical needs of theatre operation can only be handled in close coordination.

We participated in the project with project management services. Our work covered on-site client representation, monitoring the implementation process, and supporting the authority and specialist authority procedures required for the theatre to be brought back into use.

The particularity of the task came from the need to align the renovation with the reopening of a historic cultural building with a large audience capacity. In such a situation, project management is not only an organisational task, but also the continuous coordination of technical, regulatory, operational and user-related aspects.

The renewal of the Erkel Theatre helped one of Budapest’s important musical theatre venues return to cultural life and support opera and ballet performances as a large-capacity performance venue accessible to a wider audience.
