Development of Fertőrákos Cave Theatre for tourist purposes

The tourism-oriented development of the Fertőrákos Cave Theatre and Quarry served the renewal of a distinctive cultural and natural site. The aim of the investment was to transform the quarry and cave theatre, located in a World Heritage environment, into a modern, visitor-friendly tourism and cultural destination that can be used more effectively throughout the year.

As part of the development, the interior spaces of the theatre, the auditorium, the orchestra pit, the stage, and the lower and upper stage machinery were renewed. The facility was also expanded with new functions: an exhibition and visitor centre, a thematic experience park, an educational trail, a reception building, a service building and parking areas were added. The interactive exhibition surfaces help visitors better understand the wildlife of the Miocene period, the formation of limestone and the history of the quarry.

We participated in the investment with project management and technical supervision services. Our role covered the professional control of implementation, coordination of the participants’ work, review of technical content and support for quality assurance.

The professional character of the project came from the fact that the development had to be implemented in a sensitive natural and World Heritage environment. Theatre, tourism, exhibition, transport and visitor-flow requirements had to be coordinated in a way that preserved the natural values and monumental character of the quarry.

The value of the development lies in the fact that the Fertőrákos Cave Theatre and Quarry can function at the same time as a cultural event venue, visitor centre and natural tourism attraction. The renewed site strengthens the tourism offering of the Sopron–Fertő region, while preserving and making the quarry’s unique heritage values more accessible and easier to understand.
