Reconstruction of Kossuth square

The comprehensive reconstruction of Kossuth Lajos Square was carried out as part of the Steindl Imre Programme. The project renewed the entire surroundings of the Hungarian Parliament Building and included the construction of a new visitor centre, a three-level underground car park and museum spaces, while the square’s transport, utility and landscaped areas were also extensively redesigned.

Our task was to review the construction design documentation for the buildings and structures implemented as part of the development. Our engineers assessed the plans from professional and technical perspectives to ensure that the documentation provided a reliable basis for construction.

The complexity of the project was shaped by the immediate proximity of the Parliament Building, the extensive underground structures and the nearby Danube. The visitor centre was built below the square on nearly 3,000 square metres, with a three-level underground car park providing 600 parking spaces beneath it. Flood protection requirements and the conditions necessary for landscaping the surface also had to be taken into account in the technical solutions.
