Grytøy Education Centre (Lundenes, Norway).
The city with a population of 21,000 is located 1,025 km from Oslo, 250 km north of the Arctic Circle. The archipelago administratively belonging to the city is one of the northernmost permanently inhabited archipelagos in the world. Norway's first Hungarian-designed kindergarten was built on one of its picturesque islands, Grytøya.
The island of Grytøya is a continuation of the Lofoten archipelago, on which a jagged volcanic mountain of 1013 meters rises high. For the locals, the center of the settlement is the small wooden church built in the 70s and the school building next to it for 50 students. Near them, there is an old manor house painted in reddish burgundy, built of wood, and some old fishermen's huts with peat roofs.
The municipality wanted the building to be formally simple and fit in with the local gabled roof construction. The main entrance is on the north side, and the group and playrooms are on the south side facing the sea. A "drip" dressing room is connected to the main entrance, where the little ones get rid of their anoraks and rubber boots. From there, they reach the group rooms through two clean changing rooms. The children have a common living room and dining area, which is connected to a large American kitchen. The kindergarten teachers cook here a quick lunch like in a larger family home.
The offices, meeting room and rest room of the kindergarten teachers open from a separate section of the corridor. From these, however, the view of the playground is excellent.
On the south side, huge windows with automatic zip-screen sun protection let in the light. And in the line of the transversal wing perpendicular to the main axis of the building, up to the dressing rooms, the raised ceiling height that follows the shape of the roof brings light into the interior of the building.
Inside the building there are internal windows and glass walls. Thus, there is a visual connection between several interior spaces.
Our company has been awarded a contract to prepare building permit designs and craft-level designs for the main contractor’s tender dossier for the construction of a new day nursery in Grytøy Education Centre (Lundenes, Norway).
