Development of the Mátra Power Plant

The development of the Mátra Power Plant is one of the significant investments of Hungary’s energy transition. A new combined-cycle gas turbine power plant unit is being built at the Visonta site, supporting the replacement of existing lignite-fired capacities and the more stable operation of the electricity system.

The role of the new power plant is especially important for the integration of renewable energy sources into the system. The flexibly controllable technology is able to balance fluctuations in weather-dependent electricity generation, while operating with lower specific carbon dioxide emissions than the previous lignite-based generation.

We are participating in the project as general designer, commissioned by Status KPRIA Zrt. and West Hungária Bau Kft. Our task is to prepare the building permit and construction design documentation for the buildings, surfaces and supporting systems that accommodate the power plant technology, as well as to provide on-site designer supervision. Our work covers architectural, structural, mechanical and electrical design, as well as the design of the related civil infrastructure.

The professional complexity of the project comes from the fact that the power plant technology, the buildings, the supporting systems and the infrastructure form a closely interconnected technical system. In an investment of this kind, the design task is not about drafting individual buildings, but about the coordinated design of a large-scale, technology-driven industrial environment.

The value of the development goes beyond the construction of a new power plant unit. The investment contributes to the security of Hungary’s energy supply, supports the greater use of renewable energy generation, and gives the Visonta site of the Mátra Power Plant a new role in the energy transition.
